Subject: Wheat straw hay for feed.

I have a pet wheat patch that’s way over done on fertilizer. It has cows on it now, females that are getting too fat. I would normally hay it, but with high grain price. I’m thinking about cutting for grain and haying the straw. Maybe top dress the windrows with liquid feed or something to improve quality. I’m really trying to seize the moment and make a “double crop” off this block.

Hay would be fed to supplement summer pasture that’s Johnson grass and Klein grass. I also intend to plant a block of millet to graze in rotation.

So my options:
Cut for grain, bale the straw with some liquid feed dressed in it. Make wife happy with some cash from the grain and I could buy some hay if I needed.

Cut for grain, graze stalks a bit, spend grain money on hay.

Bale it for super high quality hay and have the baler bill to pay. (This will give me a year supply of hay barring some catastrophe)

Either way if soil moisture is replenished any time after harvest. I’ll double crop some millet or something.
