Corn roots will grow if there is moisture as long as there isn't saturated soil with no oxygen. What "crop" was growing when they tested this soil properties. Each crop has a different root structure. In Corn a majority of your fines hair roots are going to be located within 6" of the seed. Coarse roots that are more responsible for water and n uptake will go as deep as possible. Might be 12" might be 6ft plus. There has to be water and oxygen. 62% of corn roots are fine hairs. Soybeans 40%. Sugar beets 21% Because of this corn is much more efficient at taking up PK than beans or beets. Beets are better at going deep and getting N. But how roots develop and how fine hair develop off of main root determines how well the crop functions in various soil types.
