When my great great grandfathers came from Germany and Sweden in 1848 and 1849, the boats averaged 2 miles per hour. When my great grandma came from Sweden in 1892, the boat she came on average speed was 2 miles per hour. Took 10 weeks to get to Ellis Island. I kinda wonder what kind of speed they could achieve hauling grain via sail? It would be interesting to find out.
