Southeast South Dakota		As a computer fixer I would guess it is the 2G RAM that is killing you (as yuo found out even with Linux)
plus part of that is shared with video -

I have thrown away far better computers -

If he wants to play he can pay for an upgrade - maybe $50 or $100 would find one.
