Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
We set ours at 10". We're running HP. It will usually get on down to 4" within a few minutes after that. I lost the signal this morning and it took 10 minutes to go from 17" to 8". Hopefully you don't have to drive through a bunch of woods to get to the field. If you do, you may want to move your machine the night before and leave the unit on. After you get convergence, you shouldn't ever have to wait more than 5 minutes unless you:

1. Move the tractor without the 500 turned on, or
2. Drive somewhere that you lose the signal. (like through the woods)

We haven't turned ours off for a couple weeks now. Even if you do turn it off, you can do a quickstart as long as the tractor hasn't moved.

As far as upgrading to 4.0, I don't see any reason to not upgrade. I like 4.0. The night mode is actually a good bit better if you run after dark. I was surprised at the difference. You should go ahead and do the upgrade before you get too used to the old version. The console may lose your OmniStar subscription when you do the upgrade, but just call OmniStar and they'll re-send the signal for you. It's quick.
