Henry,

I would not plant festolium for dry hay.  It is VERY slow to dry.  It does make excellent silage or graze.

The Hakari brome is gaining popularity in my area, especially among the Amish.  It is later maturing than orchardgrass and has good yields and quality.  On the down side, the stand life is not as long.

If you are selling the hay to horse people in my area, it needs to be either orchardgrass or timothy.  Those are the only two grasses that the horse owners seem to be able to recognize.  It also seems that they always want the one that you do not have (if you have orchardgrass, their horse will only eat timothy....if you have timothy, the horse will only eat orchardgrass....) .  Timothy is a little bit faster to establish than orchardgrass, but not by much.  As others have said, put a little bit of alfalfa with either and it will do much better.
