In the 80s there was an Iowa State Extension bulletin that said there would be no response to any added nitrogen for corn the year after good alfalfa, but there might be the second year that a spring nitrogen test should be done to see how much nitrogen remained for the second year.
Apparently its no longer believed because that bulletin doesn't exist now.
