Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | You are correct on the resistor. A 10K Ohm resistor between the 5 v and signal line will act as a "pull up resistor". Think of this like the small spring on an old baler counter. Without the spring the arm may not return to the up position and the counter won't always record the next bale. The pull up resister acts like the spring and returns the signal line to logic HIGH after the meter shorts it to ground. While the meter is holding the signal to ground, a small amount of current is dissipated through the resistor but doesn't hurt anything again much like the spring on the bale counter.
