Leesburg, Ohio | Sidedressing is quite popular here. We have done it for several years, first with NH3, and the last ten years or so with 28%. Used to be concerned about getting it all done between rains without the corn getting ahead of us. First few years only planned to sidedress about half the crop. Ran two rigs (one owned, one rented) the first two years we did it all. Now we just start early when the corn is maybe 3" high. One or two years we have finished when the corn is waist high running in the heat of the day so as not to break it off as it goes under the axles. One 12 row rig usually gets 150 acres a day or more putting on 40 gallons/acre on about 1000 acres. One neighbor does 2000+ acres with one 16 row outfit. With RTK guidance, it will be easier to run longer hours if we get behind.
This year we are going to try variable rate N with a rawson drive and GS2 running the piston pump on the applicator. We plan to use the same prescription maps that we will use on the planter for variable rate seeding.
Not saying we have all the answers...just like to try to improve one or two things each year...we'll see how this year's projects turn out. | |
