Southwest OK | I had a 53’ ground load, and have downgraded to a 24’. My operation changed enough that it was sitting quite a bit, and it needed some money spent on it that I couldn’t justify for the amount of use I was getting out of it.
Any time I move more than 8 cows, I miss it. I am hiring ground loads cheaper than I can own it though.
As far as getting around, a short truck with a setback axle and a 53’ ground load is easier to get around with than a double cab long bed one ton with a triple axle 32’ stock trailer. Better turning radius, and no need to worry about bending an axle or popping a tire by turning too short.
It the mud, my experience is if it’s too wet to haul with the ground load, it’s too wet to haul with a gooseneck.
A tandem with aggressive tires goes well, and a single axle with a locker does alright also. I’ve actually been able to go places that pickups and trailers couldn’t. Better flotation, and the axles don’t drag as shallow.
