SW OH | There has to be a vent somewhere if it has a rubber fill plug. Operating large cylinders that displace large volumes of oil and changes in temperature of the oil and air in the system will either need a vent, or be capable of substantial captive pressure. There must be a vent that is dirty and plugged up. Captive pressure systems won't work with a rubber fill plug.
All the larger CAT loaders at work have vents on the transmissions that are always plugged. Filling faster than a small trickle will result in burping to the ceiling. Getting to the vent to clean it requires removing the cab unless you are Ethiopian with stretch Armstrong arms.
The old 4X4s you mention that burped did have a vent. It is the cap itself. When you pour oil in the fill tube you can fill the tube completely and it will burp. 2 wheel drives do the same thing. If you pull the dipstick out a little it will vent there and not burp.
