They work well. We just have welded tabs on the side of the hitches on silage carts and done the same thing.
Do keep an eye on it if you only use a 1/2" hitch pin and hairpin clip on top, have lost 2 or 3 of them off of silage carts this fall already, a bolt and locknut or double nut has been the best although then you need tools to unhook.
Looks like a pretty slick idea and could laser cut out for bigger hole sizes as well.
