WC Iowa
Advantages to letting winter kill the oats.
1.The oats will continue to have live roots in the soil longer which is one of the keys to building soil health.
2.The longer the oats grow the more sugar they will transfer to the roots. This sugar will feed soil microbes which will improve the soil.
3. The soil microbes will also make more glomalin the longer they live. Glomalin is one of the best aids for improving soil structure.
4. The winter freeze is free.
5. Potential higher yields of future crops from increased water infiltration and improved soil health from having a living crop in the field longer.

Advantages to spraying now.
1. Lower income taxes due to increased costs for herbicide and fuel.
