I would recommend that you use a UPS on the computer CPU only to save on the size of the UPS. For IT equipment, the UPS is generally designed to maintain power to equipment when power is lost or a brown-out type condition occurs, and to gracefully shutdown the equipment after a specific amount of time if power is not restored so as not to lose or corrupt data. Since losing power to a printer or monitor will not cause a loss of data or in general will not cause harm to those peripherals, and there is no way to gracefully shut them down anyway, it is recommended that a surge protector be used to protect your peripherals from something like a power surge or a lightening strike. Not all surge suppressors will protect equipment from a lightening strike. Those that will are more expensive and will usually come with a guarantee regarding lightening.
