South east Saskatchewan
In regards to the original posters question, I'm in the same place as you in a lot of ways. For almost all of my neighbor's who bought drones, it is a toy. I do think the tech has matured well that can pay for it self easily. The questions that I have, How much does one need to spend to get meaningful data? If its the whole farm or just a quarter or two ? Custom guys are in place nowadays that have tech that I don't know that we could easily afford on our own use for a mid sized farm on our own. If I am going to buy a drone myself budgeting a modest amount I am not sure I can do things beyond the nice pictures or scouting applications. I know of local work done with a real expensive set up that create valuable data. Is that the best way ? For me I can see the drainage aspects are what interest us most . We already pay now for vari rating inputs, zone soil testing, etc. utilizing satellite and yield data. Costs adds up to quite a bit but I do feel its worth it.
