Newer machines are setup for docking, which by default they're enabled to fully function while closed as they are expected to be connected to power.  I can remove one cord from my laptop and use it as a true laptop on the road, and bring it back to my desk closed, plug in the one main cable, and now it functions as a desktop across all 3 monitors and my usb devices and all are ready to go.
