South Plains of Texas | In our area the sand will kill the cotton and damage peanuts. We use the wheat, rye, or oats for a row-till and when it gets a little bigger we will kill the wheat and use it for ground cover. Some will plant the wheat on flat ground, harvest the wheat one year and then plant cotton into the wheat stubble the next year. In years past we would run a sandfighter to keep the sand from hurting the cotton but we have found on irrigated that the wind and static electricity will still hurt young cotton so we use the wheat stubble to protect from the wind. | |
