Thank you, Mike. We have experienced positive results in 2 year rotations with seed applied inoculants with an LSD of .05.

One statement about poor quality inoculant is very important. When I have been called on a failure to nodulate issue, it has always been on product that is a two year labeled product and in it's second year. I speculate that the storage of that product over that time is the issue with warehouses getting too hot and seeing bacteria die-off.

Also, there is no regulation on inoculants. The CFIA (Canadian regulatory agency) had a standard that stated a legume the size of a soybean would need to have 100,000 live bacteria or CFUs (Colony Forming Units) on the seed to be able to be labeled as an inoculant. There are products sold in the US that apply as few as 2,500 or 2.5% of what they determined to be effective. Producers using these products may be getting them for a lower cost but with very little efficacy.

Thank you for your attention to this important agronomic practice.
