The way to keep nodules pink and producing is to keep the plants healthy.

The symbiotic relationship is that the plant provides carbohydrates for the bacteria and receives N in return. When the plant goes under stress--drought, disease, etc.--the plant will divert resources from the nodules to support itself.

So, when you are managing plant health you are indirectly managing nodule health.
