| The oil filter bypass was brought to our attention a little over a year ago. We started seeing some Tier IVa Steigers with repeat turbocharger failures and was alerted to this problem. This can be a problem on all Tier IVa Steigers from a 400 on up. So far, every one I have removed has evidence of the relief valve being damaged...so its something that I would highly recommend everybody looking at.
On the 550/600s with the twin turbo setup, it usually takes out the top turbocharger...and then you have to replace the rear section of the exhaust manifold as you will get a different style of turbocharger to use in place of the original one.
As far as the OP's concern, I really wouldn't recommend any modern diesel to idle any more than it has to...its just not good for these newer emissionized engines to sit and idle.
When the turbochargers fail, they tend to put oil in the exhaust, which can cause harm to the SCR chamber. | |
