The 12 point side accepts the nut. The 8 point side accepts a 3/4” drive tool, usually a breaker bar. There isn’t enough clearance for a standard 3/4 drive socket and ratchet and the torque requirements are pretty high for 1/2” drive or combination wrenches. The tool is not a requirement but is a great convenience.
