My understanding is the the enso was a measure of atmotsheric pressure, at the equator. The change in pressure then changes the flow of the trade winds and that's how you get different temperatures of the sea level ,at the surface. Change in sea surface temperatures then change the placement of low and high pressure systems away from the equator.
