That would be a new one on me. Not saying it couldn't happen, seems there is something new almost every year. I'd be curious to dig some root balls up and maybe do a rootworm soak but that would be a real WAG.
Edit - never mind, went an reread, you stated the top portion of the plant and I didn't catch that.
