Subject: RE: What is it - plow experts

Leesburg, Ohio
The Kuhn video shows jointers, but they do not show them running against a coulter.

We had jointers on some Deere plows in the 60's. They mounted to the frame and were adjusted to run butted up against the right-hand side of the coulter just behind the coulter axle. They looked just like a small moldboard. They skimmed a small "furrow" off the top left corner of the main furrow slice as the coulter made its vertical cut ahead of the main moldboard. It threw that little slice over behind the previous furrow so it would be buried by the furrow slice it was removed from. It made for a much "cleaner" job by burying more of the "trash" that would otherwise be left sticking up between furrow slices.

When cover boards became available, we quit using the jointers. The cover boards did basically the same job as the jointers, and were less trouble to keep adjusted, and less prone to plugging. They mounted above the existing moldboard, and peeled/drug a small corner off the furrow slice as it came by, and since it was more severely curved than the main moldboard, it threw the small slice over behind the preceding furrow, just like a jointer would do.

Edit: I see CASE3594 above has a good pic of a plow with coverboards now.
