Subject: RE: Improving a hard pan in sand

Holland, Indiana (SW IN)
Could write a book about sand and hard pan BUT I still don't know how to handle it and my last statement in book would be I DON'T KNOW or it depends
FWIW I have had the best luck with cover crops ----Worst luck with Fall tillage--our sand just compacted back worse and deeper HOWEVER the ripper pulled easy
IMO you need to get organic matter built up to keep some what loose(or roots to keep loose)--so some kind of cover crop --I'm wanting to try Annual Rye grass again
Have been using 15-20# of soft red wheat planted in fall
I have never had trouble with water going through to the gravel layer BUT most of my sand is irrigated
AND as always on AgTalk all areas are different

An opinion possibly worth the cost
Good luck Dan
