He is merely pointing out the design life expectancy. Ag has one of the lowest design life expectancy of all machines with some products under 1000 hrs design life. Most modern tractors are 10-12k hr design life where as construction is 50-60k hr design life. It is not uncommon for trucks to get 1,000,000 miles without an overhaul (that is 17-20k hours) where a typical ag tractor expects an overhaul at 8-10k. Likewise construction equipment is similar to on highway (20k overhaul intervals).
The same applies to vehicles and is the reason 4500/5500 trucks have lower hp ratings than the 3500 counterparts. Medium duty trucks are expected to last 500k miles while light duty trucks are 250k. Look at pins on construction loaders and they are often 2x as big as the ones on a similar sized farm loader (larger pins wear less and thus have a longer service life). The fact of the matter is Ag use expects replacement more often than industrial use and this is reinforced with the advances in technology that essentially obsolete the iron before the iron wears out. Would you pay 2x as much for a tractor that will last 50,000 hours? Most won't because they will plan on replacing long before that time has come.
Interesting - - - - was hoping that I wasn't the only one noticing this kind of stuff.
Just talked with a trucker in the last 2 weeks (sort of unusual with the covid lockdowns) and he told me that he did his engine at about 1.5 million miles.
At around 2.5 million miles he's redone all the major components and has no intention of dumping the truck.
There is all this talk about the tough environment that farm equipment works in.
Funny construction equipment also works in such.
But the manufacturers have the farmers convinced that it just isn't possible to run ag equipment for those kind of hours.
Lower on the page one farmer talking about 60k hours between 5 tractors and 2 almost did half of that.
Maybe he only ran those tractors on the road I guess.
Makes me wonder when farmers are going to get how much they're getting ripped off.
I didn't go into business to make other people money.
The fertilizer, ag chem, seed and farm equipment companies sure seem to think otherwise! |
