I seeded some alfalfa and orchard grass via broadcast last fall with disappointing results, so I rented a Great Plains no till drill and no tilled into in with alfalfa and oats back in the first week of April. I had planned to mow it as soon as I finish side dressing, but I’ve been told by a couple guys to wait an extra month on a new seeding to let the alfalfa root system establish better. Makes some sense, though the oats and mixed grasses are ready to cut.

So what is the stock talk concencus? When to mow and how high? I have a Heston 1320 I bought at a sale last year, I assume there is some kind of setting for cutting height.

In seeding year recommended alfalfa height at 20" before cutting.
First time saw this today. I usually used a nurse crop and when that was cut - - - - well there just wasn't much growth - - - - but then I was a wee bit further north than most on here.
