I always thought it was easier to stay on the row with front mounts vs the rear mounts. It seemed instinctive that if you turned the wheel too far to the right you would nick the rows to the right. Rear mount seemed the opposite. Adjust too far to the right & you'd nick the rows to the left.
Also looking forward was natural with front mount cultivators & it was easy to see if you were still centered. On rear mounts, if you turned around to see how it was doing, or watch to see if you were covering, or not going deep enough, you'd turn back to the front & see you were 6" off, then you'd correct, then POOF....4 or 6 rows gone! Sometimes you just had to stop, back up, recenter & start up again slowly.
Biggest advantage to rear mounts was the speed/time to hook up (took 1/2 day to ready & mount a front 4 roow), also wider models alllowed for folding. Front mounts were mostly limited to 4 rows, except the pusher type front folds, which I don't think I ever saw personally, just in photos.
