The cardboard is a great trick! And it keeps you from cutting yourself on the fins too. Sometimes those fans and pulleys really stick on there. I've had to pound them off with an air hammer more then once, and it is possible to pull the water pump off without pulling the pulley. It is a pain though. Then you can get at it good to get it off.
