Central Iowa | I did this last year, but in 20 ft strips (8 x 30” corn, 16 x 15” beans). Had two different fields planted this way, one planted N-S the other E-W. The one planted N-S worked much better. All the beans in the N-S rows got equal amounts of sun light. In the E-W rows the south 3-4 ft of each bean strip was shaded by the corn from late June all the way to maturity. This narrow shaded strip of beans were 5 ft tall and stayed green well into October and wrapped on the end of the reel. I should have done what you are doing by putting a shorter season bean on the edges of the strip.
Yields: Corn was 25-30 bu better in the strips. Beans were 5 bu less in the strips.
Good luck on your endeavor.
