NC IA | I'm building some hay racks here. The first one I built using 3 - 2x10x16' treated boards laminated together for each stringer (6 boards total, 3 on each stringer). They are quite tall and make the rack sit a bit higher than I would like.
I'm thinking I could probably be pretty safe going down to a set of 3 - 2x8's instead of the 2x10s. Any thoughts on this? I think the 2x10 size is probably overkill, but I like to overbuild things.
The way I build these is the 2x10 stringers on the running gear, with 4x4's sitting across the stringers, spaced about 2 ft apart. Then "thick" 2x6 decking for the actual deck which is screwed to the 4x4's (16' long). I have seen where people drop the 4x4's all together and just attach 2x8's to the stringers and use that as the deck. Maybe the 4x4's could be dropped and I could go this route.
Any thoughts on design changes I could make? or just leave as-is?
