Subject: RE: Hay Rack Stringer size

Puckerville Dead center N.Y.
I had to replace all of the wood stringers after years of use and used 7" channel iron. I did one with larch and it looked nice but the main beams cracked on the 2nd load. What a disappointment. And a lot of work for nothing. And the expense of having to buy supplies twice. This didn't just crack it put the wagon out of commission for the rest of the year until I had time to redo it again. That is when I decided to use steel. Then I went one step further and used expanded steel for the floor and now the chaff blows off and keeps the floor clean.

Yes I'm sure steel was more money. Especially the recent ones. Flip side is I will never in my life have to deal with broken stringers on a hay wagon again.

Next breakdown I have won't be that.
