Subject: Multi branch circuits and NEC

Le Sueur VIA St.Thomas
Who's up on their NEC? I am finishing my basement (Minnesota) and have a 14-3 wire in my basement- 1 circuit is for my lights and the other is the smoke detector. Can I keep it this way (and still pass inspection) or do i need to run 2 separate lines? It's easy enough to switch right now...

Related question- While examining my wiring situation if found another 14-3 line just sitting there. It runs from my breaker box to the far end of my basement. It is not hooked up to the electrical panel. I'm assuming it was placed there during construction for future use. Can I use this as a multi branch circuit? If so, I would use it for 2 light circuits. If not, just one...

good luck- jim
