If that's the situation anyway, then why not shut down for a few weeks and reduce the risk of workers getting sick and possibly dying. Sure it's probably in the company's best interest, too, but so what. Some people are so concerned with making money that they'd never even consider shutting down even if it would protect their workers. Assembly line workers are often used to having shut downs for plant maintenance and for inventory adjustment reasons so I doubt the workers are too unhappy about the layoff right now. The problems at the meat packers is a more serious issue in my opinion. If somebody doesn't get their new combine on time then they'll figure out a way to get it done, but if there's no meat on the store shelves then a lot of people are going to be upset including the livestock producers who are taking a big hit on their bottom line.
