E ND | The problem with most air compressors is that (1) they aren't safe for breathable air due to oil carryover as mist, (2) most don't run reliably at a low enough pressure, (3) they make a lot of heat in compression.
I think the pressure and volume of air is the least of the problem for ventilators, it's the complex controls to actually help a patient and get the oxygen in the lungs.
Between existing air compressors and the idea of "surge" milkers in the dairy industry you'd think they could come up with a central unit that would serve multiple patients in a room or wing (some compression and some vacuum with switching and oxygen injection adjustable per bed) but probably not economical or practical up to now to have a system dedicated to treat multiple patients without a respiratory virus pandemic. Any multiple use system has hygiene, reliability/backup concerns, etc. I'm sure. | |
