Subject: RE: New hot water heater

Dekalb County IL
A few years back, our water had a sulfur smell also. I took the original magnesium anode rod out which didn’t look to be very corroded and replaced it with just a pipe plug. The smell didn’t go away even after a few days. I installed an aluminum/zinc rod which was recommended for smelly water. The smell still didn’t go away. I racked my brain trying to figure out what was going on. Then, I remembered I had changed softener salt type from the standard yellow bags to the green bag with rust removal. I went back to the yellow bags and the smell dissipated over time. We haven’t had any more odors using the standard yellow bag salt.
