Arva, Ontario
Mixing alfalfa and clover, then doing weed control gets difficult.
I know our trade names don’t always jive, but ‘here’ we have a product called Embutox, which is 2,4-DB and is the preferred weapon in alfalfa. We'd use 16oz/ac, and if there’s some mustards add 1 oz if MCPA Amine.

Timing is very important. Use the alfalfa staging as the indicator. Too early or too late and you bang the crap out of the alfalfa. We look for all 1st trifoliate in the alfalfa. Second tri’s are OK, by 3rd, you’re getting injury and yield loss from late weed control.

I’d NOT use straight MCPA in this situation. But add a sniff as it enhances control with the 2,4-DB.

For an even better forage stand, harvest the cereals at the boot stage and chop/pack in a bunk or bale and wrap.
Some guys want the trifecta. 100 bu of oats, 100 small squares of straw, and a perfect stand of alfalfa. It’s a once in a lifetime thing (like 30cwt of navies, no pick, no dock, and dry...).

More than you asked for. Lots of time these days. Self quarantining for 14 days...

Ken
