coast of Maine
When we first started growing veg frost occured some the first week of June and the first fall frost first week of september. It was a very short season with no crop covers etc. weather has eased a bit so last killer frost 10th may approx when we are in fruit bloom so we sweat it out. Now we cover many acres with cloth and 20 acres with clear poly. Early sweetcorn at one time was our main driver at the market but thats slipped a little as families have shrunk and people eat out more etc..But we still strive to try to get it by July 10th so we put a lot in with poly covering usually in the next two weeks. Those early potatoes will be able to hand dig and sell by june 4th.We do some sun sprouting in a greenhouse for close to a month before they get put in that cold ground. We are always trying to stretch our season ends to keep more customers coming to Beths. This curve of virus has me really concerned for no customers equals broke. We do live in a unique micro climate in Knox county.Omly get 2 days above 90 degrees a year s that gives us sort of a coastal climate like N california till it gets cold.Strawberries are grown a lot by us now with harvest starting June 4 and picking daily til mid october.I was in SE Wisconsin last month on a cross country drive and saw many smaller dairies closed but there is quite a population base near the cities and could see the opportunity for a direct market approach there.Nice fields there also,we have very few nice fields here
