Subject: HardiPlank is best choice IMO

Too close to Raleigh, NC
With the disaster that Masonite turned out to be alot of people shied away from lap siding and went to vinyl as it is easier and cheaper to retro/cover with. I am covering the old painted plywood gable ends of my house with HardiPlank because I hate vinyl. Plus the heat does a number on it if you don't have the expensive thick vinyl.

I will put it this way, the million dollar plus houses in this area get HardiPlank, the low end get vinyl.

Cut it with a dedicated HardiPlank circular saw blade, wear a good respirator, use a framing nailer with full head 8d galvanized nails set on the lowest pressure the gun will operate on (50-60 psi), and stagger the seams. Not that hard to do correctly and it is guaranteed to outlast everything but brick.
