On Board Ram would be my preference, if a stick of Ram dies, it can be changed by yourself of a "technology minded teenager" very easily. Laptops are not all created equal. Look at business class ones, not those at Walmart.
Desktops to a degree same, Big ugly box, but its easily repaired, business class better too.
Time for new computer
