Bow Island, Alberta | Mustard, you got it right. There are a few reasons for all the hybrid canola seed production in Southern Alberta. The main one would be irrigation, since the crop is quite expensive to grow, it helps assure reasonable yields. The second reason is issolation from commercial fields. Traditionally, there was not very much commercial canola in much of the irrigated area so it was easy to get the mile of isolation required. The third reason would be the low humidity and cool nights are good for the pollinators. Some hybrid production has been done in parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba but results have not been as good. | |
