radio waves and regular tv waves are transmitted onto my property for my use. I can still use them legally. If these are transmitted from a tower versus a satellite what makes the one right and the other wrong. I can pick up the local station over my satellite and also over my antenna that's on the side of the house.

gps signals are also free, and also come from a satellite.

Being in Canada, we're watching Direct tv without paying for it. US laws aren't in effect here, so we're good to go here.
