If you meant that hard drives don't warn you before a fail, I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Maybe some just up and quit, but I have seen two of them start making some weird noises shortly before giving up the ghost. However, it wasn't very long after hearing the noise that they did fail completely. I would recommend making an IMMEDIATE backup if you hear anything out of the ordinary.

Also, as for computers making different "pitch" sounds when running - I don't know about newer PC's, but both of my Macs have variable speed fans in them that run according to the temps. This iMac has three fans and speed up during heavy processor or HD loads (such as watching or rendering video). I never hear it on this machine, but my Mac Mini is very noticeable. This is something to consider as well if a person starts hearing things.
