When you hook it up to a desktop monitor, try pressing the Function/Monitor switch button. Most laptops have the ability to output to the built in screen, the external port, or both. It might not have been sending video to that port.
If that works, it might be as simple as the video cable for the built in screen coming loose inside the machine.
