When are you planning to plant the rye? Low seeding rates result in good cover when planted early (e.g. September).

As shown in the following calculation, 90 lbs of rye/acre is a HIGH seeding rate.

90 lbs of cereal rye per acre * ~18k seeds/lb / 43560 ft2/acre = 37 seeds/ft2

Good cover can be achieved planting 30 lbs of cereal rye/a (~ 12 seeds/ft2) when planted early .

PS As already mentioned, some type of cleaning is probably desirable if your rye seed currently contains much straw or anything else that can plug your planting equipment.
