...Lettuce likes cool weather. A spring crop and a fall crop planted sometime in mid-late August will be your sweetest. If you want to cheat a little bit...take a few sections of picket fence....and arch them over the top of your lettuce row to limit the heat from the sun in the middle of the summer. Might give you another picking!
