NW Minnesota
I've had pretty good luck seeding alfalfa in August if you can catch a rain. I would probably plant a cover crop and kill it prior to no-tilling alfalfa into it, but I am into soil health and would see it as a good time to build up the soil. Maybe some buckwheat, flax, etc..Don't know if you can no-til or not but it saves a lot of moisture when there usually isn't much extra that time of year. Planting it now with a light rate of oats might be another option. You wouldn't want so much oats that it choked out the alfalfa, so maybe half bushel to a bushel of oats. Seeding in August usually has less week competition for the alfalfa, but the big risk is moisture.
