nw MN | Definitely helps but like you said they just take the edge off. Things I have found- 1 lactase tablet is good for 1 "serving" of dairy. If you drink a glass of milk that can be 2-3 servings. I always start with 2-3 tablets just to be safe. Even if you have enough the stomach is not a great place for the lactase enzyme to break down the sugars. Temp is not optimal and the ph is too low.
Most times I just keep portions small and skip the lactaid. The only time I take them is when I know I can't avoid a huge portion of dairy, like at Thanksgiving or Christmas where there is heavy cream in everything.
The lactose free milk that they have now that is pretreated with enzyme is really good and tastes close to normal milk, only thing is the lactose is converted to simpler sugars so it tastes sweeter.
Edit: and if a really good malt comes along I will put in the bathroom time LOL
