Infection?

I’ve had this when the wound seals and starts to heal before all the fluid has a chance to drain, it causes an infection and can kill them. Watch like a hawk until either you can tell from calf’s behavior it needs to be opened back up to drain, or not. I had one last fall that never stopped eating, so I just watched him and I guess he absorbed it with no problems. I’ve also had to get them in chute and open the would up to remove infection and doctor them. Wear surgical gloves, it’s nasty. Gave it a little squeeze and 2 chunks of black crud the size of my fist shot out, along with a lot of smaller chunks and fluid. 10 cc penicillin I think, then waited two days and did it again. Less black crud this time and could tell the calf was feeling better. He was fine after that.

The key is watching him and making sure he’s eating. If he’s acting normal and eating, he will probably be alright without help.
