edit to add: folks may think we are spending too much on machinery, etc (spoiled) to make a living as they show up to their job that has the employer furnishing them with the latest technology for them to work with without realizing it. We should be allowed the same consideration.


That’s not really an equivalent comparison though. Farmers aren’t employees; they’re small business owners.

Does the government help support loggers or excavators? Both have equipment costs and both can operate on a similar dollar scale to modern grain farming. I know plenty of dirt movers that run 30-40 year old CAT machinery. For a lot of guys the only remotely new pieces of equipment are their skid steers.

Just for a fun comment; small and mid-size loggers are some of the thriftiest people I’ve ever met. It’s a necessary trait for survival in a tough, tough business. Even the tightest farmer could be put to shame by their equipment cost to gross revenue ratio.
